Unlike last season, the hatchlings of the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) have already begun to emerge from their protected nests this year.
During our routine checks, we noticed new openings in several nests. In some cases, we found only eggshells, indicating that the young turtles had already made their way to the nearby wetlands. In others, we were fortunate to spot the newly hatched juveniles still near their nest sites—always a joyful and encouraging sight.
